Honeymoons – some background:
In Western culture, the custom of a newlywed couple going on a holiday together originated in early 19th century Great Britain. Upper-class couples would take what was known as the “bridal tour.”
In a complete reversal of the practice today, they would often be accompanied by friends or family.
Honeymoons, in the modern sense, became widespread during the Belle Époque, which covered a period from the 1870’s until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.
The most popular honeymoon destinations at the time were the French Riviera and Italy, particularly its seaside resorts and romantic cities such as Rome, Verona or Venice.
Many believe that these are STILL some of the most romantic honeymoon destinations.
However, the advent of air travel has created the possibility of traveling farther afield to even more exotic locations.
